the pros vs. the rookies

My assignment this week was to compare/contrast current events information contained in a webzine and a blog.

I looked at Newsweek.com and found all the information I have come to know as "news". Almost anything you wanted to know about what has occurred in the world lately was there for the asking. I next went to the current events section of a site named wordpress.com and looked at various articles, several of which dealt with Martin Luther King, Jr. The good news was they each had articles on current events. That is pretty much where the similarities ended.

Newsweek had a much more efficient lineup, easier to navigate, more information, etc. It was professionally written, and if you desire, they also have blogs to read which are linked to their site. Wordpress blogs on the other hand is quite simply opinion. The bloggers make very little attempt to verify claims, dispute "facts", or look outside the box. It is a salacious attempt to sway peoples opinions. It's as if they are saying...it's my opinion, but it should be everybody's.

While I am sure there are very committed people out there, who may have a background in journalism, and operate a very professional blog. I was unfortunately unable to find very few of them. Michael Yon is still at the top of my list, and puts to shame many if not all professional journalists.

Based on this, I would say my results strongly support my original opinion.

I completely agree wih you about bolgs being more of one's opinion. At times blogs can be resourceful, but in reality it is usually someones opinion.

I agree with your opinion that e-zines are much easier to navigate and quickly find specific news information you are searching for. Also, i feel as though, like you, that most blogs are based on opinion rather than reporting the news, which is why they are dynamically different. good research but im wondering what blog you found and what it was about that made you choose the e-zine over it?

That's very interesting. I ended up finding a blog and ezine that had more similarities than differences.

I agree. Websites like Time and Newsweek are better in almost every aspect. They are much easier to navigate in and allow people to get the full story without worrying about a bias or credibility. You also make a good point. Blogger provide little support to their claims and do not try to make their point with all the evidence built up.

With blogs, I also think that its a form of an opinion on what is going on and a source of an open discussion. Both websites though that I researched had a good setup of both articles whether e-zine or blogs.

I had a very similar problem. When looking for blogs it was really hard to find a blog that had real facts in it and that was very helpful or knowledgeable. Almost every blog I could find was people voicing their opinion about issues or articles they had read. When I went to CNN.com it was so easy for me to find the article I was looking for with so much more accurate information.

I totally agree when you say most blogs are just opinion--and often the way people present their opinions can be very pushy. I have my own opinions, I don't need someone else forcing his or her's on me. It's all fine and good when they are just stating their opinion, but it's another when they say it as if its fact. Also, I agree with what you say about the format of magazine websites being more professional and easier to navigate. However, there were some blogs I found that were very professional. I do have one question. Do you not think that these types of blogs have some sort of effect on the audiences for more credible news sources? Blogs are becoming more and more common that I think they are becoming more frequent sources of news for some people, whether or not they should be.
